Teaching.

Besides from doing research, I'm working as lecturer at the FSU Jena. Currently I'm teaching classes in: general microbial, microbial ecology and bioinformatics.

My teaching philosophy is centered around the idea that students' minds are not empty buckets that are waiting to be filled by me. Instead my ultimate aim is to empower students based on their individual background to understand the science of microbiology from a broad perspective - spanning from common basics (e.g. What defines microbial life?) as well as cutting-edge research (e.g. Multi*omics and how it changes our understanding of microbial diversity).

As a supervisor I believe in two principles: (1) "Failure is an option. There is not learning without making mistakes." (2) "I do, we do, you do". The ultimate goal is to give you the tools/knowledge that allow you to learn on your own.

Theses and profile modules

You had a look at my research and you are interested in doing a profile module, lab rotation or your thesis with me? Contact me via e-mail or drop by my office and we can talk about potential topics and details.
